Jack is an architecturally trained urban designer that specialises in cycleway planning and design.
His unique architectural background enables him to works seamlessly between disciplines within the transport sector while focusing on the human interactions, movement functions and spatial outcomes
Jack has been practicing, applying and advancing his specialised cycling skills in a multi-disciplinary environment. He understands that each project is unique, but unifies each design opportunity by placing strong focuses on functionality, end-user experience, public stakeholder engagement and design integration. This aided the successful delivery of numerous projects within the transport sector.

David is a senior transport engineer/planner at Jacobs New Zealand and has over 7 years of public sector and consultancy experience primarily in road safety engineering and active/sustainable transport planning and design. Previously worked on a wide range of road safety projects such as crash reduction studies, fatal and serious crash investigations and speed management, David has recently been involved in the development of active transport with a focus on cycleway planning and design. David has also worked on the development of Wellington’s first electric vehicle charging stations and car share services.

John Lieswyn is a former US national cycling champion who now plans and designs streets for all modes, ages and abilities. After starting as the Palmerston North transport planner, John has managed projects across the USA, Canada and NZ for ViaStrada and Alta. He specialises in research, data collection and travel planning.
Simon Kennett is a co-author of cycling books including ‘RIDE’ a history of cycling in New Zealand. He has been an event manager, trail builder, and member of the 2014 Cycling Safety Panel. He was active transport and safety coordinator for Greater Wellington Regional Council and now for the NZTA.

Dockless bike share – friend or foe?

Axel has been active as a transport engineer in New Zealand since 1998, with some prior experience in Germany. Axel specialises in sustainable transport, urban traffic engineering, traffic signals, road safety, intersection modelling and transport planning. He shares his expertise through the delivery of professional training courses and University lectures. The courses cover intersection design, planning and design for cycling and walking, economic assessment, and intersection modelling.
Axel’s skills have been sought for projects with a national scope. He was a member of the Cycling Safety Panel, convened by the NZ Transport Agency to advise the New Zealand government on cycling safety, and was technical advisor to the Ministry of Economic Development for the $50m NZ Cycle Trail project. He was ViaStrada’s team leader for the Cycling Network Guidance project that has given New Zealand its own planning and design guidance. He has undertaken numerous research projects in New Zealand and Australia.
Axel is a Director of ViaStrada based in Christchurch.

Churchill Fellowship to travel to Europe to study best-practice
cycle training programmes and advocacy. He has 20 years

Jillian completed her PhD in 2016 on the influences on cycling to school among adolescents in Christchurch. Since then she has taught Professional Studies and worked as a Research Assistant at Lincoln University and as a Sustainable Transport Advisor for the Greater Christchurch UDS.
