Lessons learnt from implementing cycling projects

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

Biography

Ben is heavily involved in the route selection, public consultation, scheme and detailed design and construction of cycling facilities in Christchurch, where he is based, as well as in many other parts of New Zealand. He has worked almost purely in this field since 2014, and has a background in a variety of other transportation activities. Ben has designed many kilometres of cycle facilities in urban, suburban and industrial environments, along with dozens of intersections. This has given him a vast range of experience and lessons to draw from in his design practice. Whilst much of his work has been focused on cycling projects, Ben is a firm believer that a cycleway is an opportunity to bring benefits to a community that extend beyond cycling.

BuyCycles - supported purchase for bike ownership

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

Biography

I have been a Health Promoter with the Canterbury District Health Board's Public Health Unit for the past 12 years. This role has allowed me to set up and support many community active transport projects such as the Christchurch Walking Festival, Frocks on Bikes, bike fix up workshops and cycling projects for migrants and former refugees. Prior to working in Public Health I was an Occupational Therapist in the mental health sector. Even then I would cycle, walk, run and (occasionally) bus to work, so I always "got" active transport, and experienced it's many benefits before I knew they were a well researched, evidence-based "thing". In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, running and cycling. In the few weeks before lock down we cycle toured up to Taranaki, around the mountain , stopping to attend WOMAD.
