After a stirring Mihi Whakatau, formal welcomes will follow from our MC, Kay Gregory and Conference Chair Dr Orna McGinn.
What does the future hold for New Zealand’s health workforce following the recent Health and Disability System Review? The Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall whose varied ministerial portfolios include health, food safety and research, science and innovation. Minister Verrall will discuss her career path from infectious diseases specialist to Labour MP, and what she sees as New Zealand’s current opportunities and challenges.
She will be followed by Fepulea’i Margi Apa who is the newly appointed Chief Executive of Health NZ and will be speaking to her vision of New Zealand’s new health system as part of the Whakahāngai (to implement, put into practice) kōrero.

On Friday morning from 8:45am to 9:00am, a Mihi Whakatau will take place. Te Papa staff will welcome us to the national museum. Following the mihi and waiata (song) we (the manuhiri/visitors) represented by Dr Orna McGinn will respond, followed by a waiata 'Whakaaria Mai'. We welcome all delegates to help create a beautiful sound in joining us to sing Whakaaria Mai. The lyrics are below.

Kay works as a Breakfast Radio Newsreader for NZME (New Zealand Media and Entertainment) and am also a Marriage and Funeral Celebrant.
Kay has been engaged as the MC at conferences for a number of organisations including Trafinz, Her Business, The Optometrists Association, Primary Care Nurses, The Celebrants Association and The Funeral Directors Association.
She also MC's at many other events, such as sports and business awards evenings and fundraisers, and is the MC for all major events for Rowing New Zealand.
Kay's main focus as a conference MC is to ensure the event runs to time, that presenters are made to feel comfortable and participants are kept fully informed. The conference will be in safe hands with Kay.

Originally from the UK, Orna has been working as a GP in Auckland with a particular focus on women’s health and contraception, since 2011.
She has held a variety of leadership roles including Clinical Director of East Health PHO and has been the Clinical Director of Primary Care Women’s Health at Auckland District Health Board since January 2019.
She is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Auckland and is on the Board of the newly formed New Zealand College of Sexual and Reproductive Health.
She is firmly of the belief that collaboration, teamwork, kindness and a sense of humour can solve most problems and is currently trying to apply this philosophy to the issues of women’s access to contraception and abortion services in Aotearoa.

Dr Ayesha Verrall is a Cabinet Minister in the New Zealand Government. She holds the portfolios of Minister for Seniors, Minister for Food Safety, Associate Minister of Health, Associate Minister of Covid-19 Response and Associate Minister of Research, Science and Innovation.
Prior to entering parliament in 2020, Dr Verrall was an infectious diseases physician at Wellington Hospital and epidemiologist at the University of Otago. She served on national technical advisory groups relating to tuberculosis control and immunisation. Dr Verrall’s rapid audit of contact tracing was influential in the development of New Zealand’s Covid-19 response.
Dr Verrall’s focus in government has been on the Covid-19 response and the strengthening of public health including:
• Developing New Zealand’s Smokefree 2025 Action Plan
• Promoting the fluoridation of drinking water
• Mandating folate fortification of non-organic bread making flour
• Investing in enhanced screening for breast and cervical cancer
• Investing in rheumatic fever vaccine development.
Ayesha grew up in beautiful Te Anau on the edge of Fiordland National Park. She attended medical school at the University of Otago and worked as a junior doctor at Wellington hospital. Ayesha completed her specialist training in Singapore and her doctoral studies on tuberculosis in Indonesia. Ayesha lives in Wellington with her partner Alice and their daughter.
Margie Apa

The Reformation: towards a future proof health system

Margie Apa is Chief Executive of Health New Zealand, the government’s new centralised national health organisation. She has more than two decades of health-sector leadership experience, previously serving as CEO of Counties Manukau District Health Board.
Before becoming CEO of Counties Manukau District Health Board, Margie was Director of Population Health and Strategy at the district health board. She is the first Samoan to lead a district health board in New Zealand and has also served as Deputy Director-General Sector Capability and Implementation at the Ministry of Health. In December 2021 she was named as Chief Executive of Health New Zealand, which is set to come into operation on 1 July 2022.
Margie graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in management and employment relations, and also has a Master of Public Administration (Executive) from Victoria University of Wellington.
She has been on the Board of World Vision New Zealand since 2011 and was appointed Chair of the Board in 2019. She is also a Trustee of the Middlemore Foundation for Health Innovation, Middlemore Clinical Trials and Lifeline Foundation Charitable Trust.
Margie is an active member of the Pacific Island Presbyterian community and carries the honorific title Fepulea’i from her family village of Sale’aula, Savai’I in Samoa.
