Dr Michelle Wise is the Deputy Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Auckland, and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Auckland District Health Board. Dr Wise is an experienced abortion provider, and contributed to the development of the first New Zealand Standards of abortion care and the first clinical practice Guideline on abortion (https://www.health.govt.nz/publication/new-zealand-aotearoa-abortion-clinical-guideline). She currently has several funded research projects on the go, supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students, and teaches all aspects of women’s health at the medical school. She has enjoyed being part of the first NZWIM conference organising committee. @wiseobNZ

Alison has been an abortion doctor for 30 years. She has experience in first trimester medical and surgical abortion and has worked in both the private and public sector in Auckland, Waikato and Lakes DHBs.
Her current roles are Clinical lead at Te Aka Tauawhi Tangata (abortion service at Rotorua Hospital) and operating doctor at Epsom Day Unit in Auckland. She is also studying a Masters of Health Science at Auckland University, her thesis being the impact of law reform on abortion services for Maori and non Maori at Lakes DHB.
She was a member of the Abortion Guidelines Project Team responsible for the Ministry of Health New Zealand Aotearoa Abortion Clinical Guideline 2021.
She was inaugural Chair of APGANZ (Abortion Providers Group Aotearoa New Zealand) and remains an active committee member.
Alison is also a director of Istar Ltd which is a charitable organisation involved in the supply of mifepristone, manual vacuum aspiration, and low sensitivity urine pregnancy tests in Aotearoa. All Istar profits are invested for the benefit of women’s reproductive health.
