Sharlene Maoate-Davis, RNZCGP Wellington Faculty. This interactive workshop offers an introduction to Te Ao Rongoā - from traditional knowledge and history to the current context. Participants will be offered an opportunity to experience traditional Māori healing modalities including learning about local signature rongoā rākau, wairākau rongoā, healing decoctions and closing with a taonga pūoro sound bath session celebrating Hine Raukatauri with international composer and practitioner, Jerome Kavanagh-Poutama. This is a perfect way to enter into this inaugural conference

Presentation Overview

This 2 hour wānanga seeks to support participants to take an interactive journey with Rongoā.
Guided by Māori creation narrative, participants will be introduced to the origins of Rongoā through Mātauranga Māori - the traditional knowledge system, knowledge and practices of restorative healing and well living.
A brief history of Rongoā will reveal the challenging pathway to today's current experience.
Interactive learning from the heart of Bush City finishing with an invitiation for a mind, body and soul healing experience with a nationally recongnised Taonga
Pūora exponent from our Rongoā Collective.

Overview

Biography

Sharlene affiliates to Taranaki, Te Atiawa, Ngati Toa Rangatira, Kai Tahu and Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga. She has a background that traverses health, education and social services. As a facilitator of whanau transformation, Sharlene has spent the past decade in her practice as a Pou Rongoa - a senior Rongoa practitioner working nationally and across her tribal regions. Sharlene co-founded a 40 strong Collective of qualified, Rongoa practitioners who currently deliver services, taiao-based programmes and events across greater Wellington. She is inspired to share the signature Rongoa knowledge and practices of her people. Sharlene will be joined by Taonga Puoro practitioner and composer Jerome Kavanagh Poutama of Maniapoto, Mokai Patea , Ngati Rangi and Whanganui iwi shares Oro Atua Puoro Maori sound journey utilising his whanau of Taonga Puoro “Te Haa o Pohokura” and modern sound technology to create an orchestra of natures song.
