Details
Hula your way into our conference this year with Hula Fix - a Wellington-based wahine run group who host community fitness programmes based on Pacific Island dance, mainly 'Ura - the traditional dance of Rarotonga. Rarotongan dancing in particular is known to be one of the most difficult dances in the world to master - but don't worry! We will show you all the moves required and then your body will tell you how fast you can shake shake shake it!
For clothing requirements Hula Fix suggest attendees have a change of clothing for the workshop. If you have a Pareu or lavalava ( which is basically a piece of material to wrap around your lower half) and t shirt that would be great as they will get hot and sweaty.
You will also need water so you can hydrate: there is a water refill station in the foyer.

9:45 AM - 11:45 AMBiography
Val, myself and Angela run a Hula fit class out of the Strathmore Community center on a Monday and a Thursday from 6pm -7pm we are the only Hula fit group based in Wellington and we are committed to providing a safe, fun non-judgemental space for everyone to come along and move their body to music. Our dance incorporates URA style cook island dance and other island styles. We are not funded, so we fundraise 4 times a year by selling raffles, we sometimes do events that we are paid for and also charge a $3 Koha mainly to cover the rental of the hall.
One of the main reasons we volunteer our time is we identify as Maori /Samoan and the statistics for obesity and diabetes in our people are high so we want to encourage an inclusive fun and safe way of exercising to music by just moving your body. one of our youngest dancers is 21 months and one of our oldest is 70 years young. if you don’t have the money that’s ok come anyway it’s not about the money it’s about the energy you bring, the vibe, the lifelong friendships you make its about your mental health and wellbeing. if you can’t come because you don’t have a sitter bring your babies they will love it. You can sit in a chair and still do the Hula fit. When you learn the routines put your own groove on it and just have fun!!
