Culturally diverse immigrant doctors. How do we understand their experience and manaaki them into Aotearoa?
12:10 PM - 12:50 PMBiography
Speaker: Dr Carolyn Providence MB:BS, FRCP, FRACP
Bio: Dr Carolyn Providence is an SMO in Stroke Medicine at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. Her journey there has been anything but direct. Born on a tiny Caribbean island, population approximately 100,00, Carolyn won the island’s top academic prize as a teenager. She went off to study medicine, via other Caribbean islands, the US and the UK, arriving on New Zealand’s shores just over a decade ago – the embodiment of an International Medical Graduate. It was in NZ however, that her passion for representation was ignited and became a long-term mission. She has pursued this on medical as well as community-based platforms, incorporating her experiences and developing her love for story-telling both in written and spoken media. She is a past president of the Caribbean Society in NZ and sits on the MeLAA Advisory Group Board of ethnographic data collection and representation.
