Difficult Conversations and how to have them with Patients, Colleagues and Managers – so although lots of those things will be touched on, the main focus is going to be on
Meetings with patients – how to set up, run and then follow up on meetings with patients and their families
Discussions with colleagues – how to approach difficult conversations, dealing with Hierarchy, speaking up, civility, communication between primary and secondary care
Discussions with management – not so much employment rights, but more regarding highlighting issues in the department, maybe resource constraints

Dr Lucy Gibberd is a Taranaki GP who has been a partner in her practice for 20 years. She joined MPS as a Medicolegal Consultant in 2015, having previously worked for the RNZCGP as a Medical Educator. She attended Cambridge University in the UK, where she studied both law and medicine, and then finished her medical training at the University of Bristol. She has been in New Zealand since 1991. She holds diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Child Health and Dermatology and was awarded a Masters in Healthcare Law and Ethics in 2019.

Dr Samantha King is a graduate of Otago Medical School. She has worked in General Practice and A&M clinics in Auckland since 1991 and is a Fellow of the College of General Practitioners. She also holds a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Masters in Healthcare Law and Ethics. She has been with MPS since 2012 and now works full time as a Medicolegal Consultant whilst working part time as a South Auckland GP. As a member of the Medical Protection faculty, Sam regularly presents at workshops, conferences and practices throughout New Zealand. She has also presented internationally. Sam is married with 3 adult children. She enjoys fishing off the back of their boat.

Victoria specialises in a number of areas including medico-legal matters, professional liability, employment and commercial litigation. Her clients include employees and employers and health practitioners.
Victoria advises on a wide variety of claims. She also advises on disciplinary charges and complaints including negligence, misconduct, and other investigations and processes by regulatory authorities. She represents clients in various disciplinary tribunals and courts as well as in mediation and dispute resolution forums.
