MBChB (Otago) FACEM, Emergency medicine specialist, Clinical toxicologist, Wellington department for emergency medicine, Wellington regional hospital, Capital and coast district health board.
Paul was an Otago medical graduate initially training in general surgery before moving into emergency medicine (EM) while working in the Hawke’s bay. Transferred to Perth, Western Australia, for advanced EM training and while there was fascinated by the amount of emergency presentations from alcohol and recreational drugs. Completed sub-specialty training in clinical toxicology combined with rotations in liaison psychiatry to develop skills in drug and alcohol medicine.
Became clinical expert in illicit drug use with a special focus on drink spiking and advisor to the Australian federal government and Australian crime commission. Crown expert on drug facilitated sexual assault.
Has been involved in providing the ministry of health and the law commission with data on alcohol harms via the wellington regional hospital patient management system. This process rolled out nationally over 2017 forming the MOH “mandatory alcohol question”. Is also independent board member for the tomorrow project an industry funded social change initiative “cheers”.
Advisor to the ministry of health on matters relating to the use of novel psychoactive agents and the development of a national drug early-warning network. Co-creator of the used extended drug testing program, which enables the detection of all known illicit substances from intoxicated emergency presentations.
Works at the “coal-face” treating trauma-patients from road crashes and also dealing with the consequences of substance abuse. Will be presenting on the current situation with drug impaired drivers. If he was to have a single wish granted to reduce the road toll it would be ban all forms of over-taking.

Jess Berentson-Shaw is a New Zealand researcher and communicator with an interest in how we build public and political support for decisions based on best information. Her current work focuses on effective ways to help people see and believe best evidence using the science of story. Jess was awarded her PhD in Health Psychology from Victoria University and has over a decade’s worth of experience working across the public and private sectors applying science and evidence to policy development. In 2018 she published A Matter of Fact. Talking Truth in a Post-Truth World, a BWB Text describing effective techniques to get good evidence believed and acted upon. You can find her writing on The Spinoff and RNZ, and Newsroom. Jess is co-director of The Workshop, a not-for-profit research, policy and storytelling collaborative, and is a research associate at the Public Policy Institute at the University of Auckland.

Dave Cliff began his role as the Chief Executive of the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) in April 2017. The GRSP is hosted within the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The role of the GRSP is to develop government, civil society and corporate partnerships to address road safety issues primarily in low and middle-income countries. The GRSP leads road policing capacity building programmes, advocacy campaigns, a global road safety leadership course jointly with John Hopkins University as well as numerous road safety programmes throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Dave came to the GRSP from his role as the Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing for New Zealand Police. He led road policing in New Zealand for several years and worked on road safety projects and assessments for the World Bank and the OECD in Vietnam, India and Korea. During 2015 he was involved in road policing capacity building with the GRSP in India, Vietnam, China, Brazil and Colombia. Dave was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 2012 Royal Honours and received a second Royal Honour in 2013 when appointed as a Member of the Order of St John (MStJ).

The Waitematā Local Board was the first to advocate for Vision Zero and is committed to achieving an accessible, connected and safe transport network with well designed streets. Pippa is a member of the National Council of LGNZ representing local boards and is an Executive Committee member of Trafinz.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is all about creating great journeys to keep New Zealand moving and Lisa helps ensure the right strategies are in place to do that.
Her team develop and embed strategic direction on critical safety and environmental issues. Delivering great results by turning strategy into action is her focus.
Lisa is a lawyer and resource management specialist with a keen interest in environmental and social responsibility. She began her involvement with the transport sector as Environmental Director for Transit New Zealand and has held various roles since, including Chief Advisor of Safety Directions, during which time she was instrumental in delivering the first Safer Journeys Action Plan with partners and introducing the transformational safe system approach to New Zealand. More recently she developed the Agency’s new strategy while in the role of National Manager Strategy and acted in the role of Director Regional Relationships for the Lower North Island.

Associate Professor Jeremy Woolley is the Director of the Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) at the University of Adelaide. CASR is a multidisciplinary research centre that has been conducting road safety research dating back to the 1960s of which at-scene crash investigation has been an integral part of its activity. CASR also provides crash testing for the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and statistical analyses and evaluations to assist with policy development.
Jeremy has been involved in road safety research for over 20 years and is noted for his leadership and knowledge transfer activities across many sectors and within all levels of government. Although specialising in speed management and road infrastructure, he is a road safety generalist who has had involvement with a diverse range of road safety areas in the past ranging from Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), enforcement and regulation, young and old drivers, heavy vehicles, data management, policy evaluation, human factors, vehicle safety, road safety communications, road safety auditing, Safe System assessment and teaching. He is a regular participant in state and national projects that seek to achieve alignment with the Safe System approach to road safety and has also been an active contributor and developer of road safety strategies and action plans in multiple jurisdictions.
Jeremy accepted an invitation in 2017 by then Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, the Hon Darren Chester MP, to co-chair an inquiry into the performance of the Australian National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS). The terms of reference allowed for an assessment of current performance and also the consideration of future responses to road safety. The other Inquiry panellists included co-chair Dr John Crozier (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) and official advisors Mr Lauchlan McIntosh (Chair of Global NCAP and President of the Australasian College of Road Safety) and Mr Robert McInerney (CEO of iRAP). The findings from the inquiry were released at a non-partisan event hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Michael McCormack on 12 September 2018 in Canberra.

Since 1995 Andy has chaired major Wellington City Council committees covering Transport, Infrastructure, Built and Natural Environment, Recreation, Urban Development and Strategy and Policy. He now chairs Council’s Finance Committee as well as being Council’s Urban Development Leader.
He was a founding trustee and long-time Guardian of Karori Sanctuary (Zealandia), and is President of TRAFINZ ‐ the Traffic Institute of NZ. He chairs the Karori Brooklyn Community Charitable Trust, and Karori Park Sports Club.
He’s served on several Boards and has recently been appointed to the Board of Wellington International Airport Ltd. Andy is a Sanctuary volunteer, a keen mountain runner, footballer and enjoys tramping, kayaking and skiing.
