Biography

Blair has accumulated wide-ranging experience over the last 25 years from client and consultancy perspectives whilst being passionate about ITS/AV/EV/MaaS technologies. His current role is Principle for Transport Network Optimisation at Aurecon. Blair works with a large team of engineers and analysts in diverse fields such as future technologies, traffic control centre operations, traffic signal design and coordination, ramp metering, incident management, driver information systems, ITS asset management along with road, bridge and tunnel operations. Blair has attended many ITS world congresses, with the latest being in Melbourne 2016, Montreal in 2017 and Copenhagen in 2018 and Singapore in 2019. As a Graduate of Aurecon’s Design Academy, Blair bridges the gap between End User desires, Transport Planning and Future Technology Operations of the transport network. Blair is also proud to be part of the ITS NZ Board. He is keen to help build decarbonised future transport network investigating Autonomous Vehicles, Micro Mobility and the Post Covid-19 changes to society.

Biography

Gemma has a key interest in ensuring communities have access to transport choice, with a passion for good streetscape and public realm design to support placemaking. She specialises in planning and designing for active modes and public transport movements, and has a key interest in safe streets and places. Her design experience includes all forms of streetscape and intersection design including roundabouts and traffic signals for intersection upgrades and safety improvements. She had a leading role in delivering An Accessible projects, Public Transport priority projects and initiating the major cycleway network in Christchurch. She is a qualified Road Safety Auditor and a Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS). She is active in the Engineering NZ Transportation Group, a member of the Urban Design Forum and an Associate member of New Zealand Planning Institute.

Glen has worked in the NZ transport sector for 25 years, as a transportation engineer and researcher. He specialises in road safety and sustainable transport, with particular interest and expertise in walking & cycling and speed/traffic management. Glen has been investigating the effects of traffic speeds for about a decade, including research on street treatments and speed limits, and has travelled extensively to study overseas practices in this area. At ViaStrada, he works for a wide variety of national and local clients providing expert advice on traffic and transportation matters, and helping to develop best-practice transport facilities and guidelines. Glen joined ViaStrada in 2016, having spent the previous 12 years with the University of Canterbury, and prior to that with Opus International Consultants. He has a PhD in Transportation Engineering, as well as Masters and Bachelors degrees in civil engineering and computer science.

The paper was written by: Axel Downard-Wilke is a Director of ViaStrada Ltd., a transport planning and engineering consultancy based in Christchurch. Axel holds an ME (Civil) from Canterbury University, and has been active as a traffic engineer and transport planner in New Zealand since 1998. Through commercial courses and University lectures, Axel has taught planning and design for cycling and walking, intersection design, economic assessment and intersection modelling. He has been involved in the development or review of cycling strategies and facilities for many TLAs. Axel was the technical advisor to the Ministry of Economic Development for the $50m NZ Cycle Trail project (2009-12), including the development of the NZ Cycle Trail Design Guide (ongoing). He was a member of the Transport Agency-commissioned Cycling Safety Panel who released the report “Safer Journeys for People who Cycle” in December 2014. He was the ViaStrada team leader for updating cycling planning and design guidance for the Transport Agency in support of the Urban Cycleways Programme; the resulting Cycling Network Guidance (CNG) was published in July 2016. She previously worked as a Transport Team Leader at Harrison Grierson where she led the Tauranga Street Design Guide project, and is now assisting with adoption of the Guide and Tool within Council. Sarah's role covers a wide range of transportation projects, but her passion lies in the sustainable transport space, and the interaction between transport and communities.

Neelima has 15 years’ experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering in the US. She moved to New Zealand 6 months ago and is currently leading multiple projects with Auckland Transport and Panuku. Her focus areas are multi-modal corridor studies, bus priority studies, safety analysis, work-zone traffic management, signal optimisation, and aviation (landside) planning. She is a recognized subject matter expert in transport modelling using VISSIM and Synchro. She has provided traffic and transportation consulting services to a wide variety of clients throughout the US including local governments, state governments and central government agencies, and is currently working on several Auckland Transport projects. She is quite passionate about her work and treat it as a brand that clients expect and derive value from. Over the past 15 years, she has established a reputation for delivering practical solutions for some of the most complex multi-modal transportation engineering projects around the US. Neelima held leadership positions in multiple international engineering organisations such as Institute of Transportation Engineers and Women’s Transportation Seminar. She has demonstrated success in strategic business development, practice building, long-term client partnerships and cross-functional stakeholder management. She is currently leading the traffic engineering team in the Auckland Region of Stantec.

Darek is a highly skilled manager and a people leader with 14 years’ experience in various roles in the transportation industry. Darek is leading Auckland Transport’s transition to zero emission bus fleet known as Auckland’s Low Emission Bus Roadmap. He leads the collaboration with private bus operators to facilitate greater understanding of the benefits of moving to zero emission fleet and promotes greater uptake of electric buses while assessing the benefits of using hydrogen. He also plays a key role in the development of supply chain to support the transition from diesel to electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses, their management, operations and charging infrastructure. He is leading the Low Emission Bus Working Group in NZ tasked with overcoming challenges and removing barriers to earlier adoption of zero emission buses in Auckland and New Zealand.

Rebecca co-authored the Waka Kotahi Research Report 667, entitled 'Developing methodologies for improving customer levels of service for walking'. Benjamin is a Senior Transportation Planner and Sustainability Practitioner at Abley. He provides analysis for transport strategies, international literature reviews, and research pieces, with a focus on walking, cycling, and micro-mobility (e.g. e-scooters). He has also successfully helped clients obtain government funding through his business case writing skills. His passion for the environment has seen him develop expertise in measuring and forecasting transportation carbon emissions. Benjamin has Master’s degrees in Political Science from Sciences Po Rennes (France) and in Regional & Urban Planning from the London School of Economics (UK). This education gave him an ability to grasp how cities and regions function on a social, economic, and political level. He was a transport Planner in the UK working for a coalition of five west London Boroughs. There, he helped companies and developers promote alternatives to car use (active travel, public transport). He also delivered cycle parking infrastructure projects on residential roads and managed a behaviour change cycling programme and on a university campus. Benjamin brings a unique combination of public sector and start-up experience to the Abley team. He founded an early stage parking start-up in London and joined Lime’s operations in Melbourne and Auckland, handling both deployment/retrieval and repairs of the e-scooters. What Benjamin loves is a beautiful streetscape where people walk, cycle, and scoot safely around each other, and stop to enjoy the atmosphere. He believes in a future with climate-resilient communities and without the need for fossil fuels.

Matiul is a Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in Infrastructure Asset Management within the transport infrastructure environment across New Zealand and United Kingdom. As Asset Manager for Structures and Public Transport at Auckland Transport, he leaders the asset management and engineering of an asset portfolio that includes roading structures and public transport assets. His previous experiences across management consultancy and public sector saw him lead business units, advise asset owners on the management of infrastructure assets; design and deliver of projects to time, quality and budget; and resolve engineering problems by thinking laterally, conceptually and creatively.
