Dr Tan has been involved in the optical industry for over 20 years. He is a Ph.D. graduate in optical engineering from the University of Cambridge. He started an R&D career in the U.S. after his graduate research, focusing on fiber-optic communications, light projectors and liquid crystal displays. He holds more than 20 U.S. and European patents from this research work. He is now based in Singapore, leading the regulatory development and road safety advocacy through government/industry safety standard setting, webinars and outreach programs. He had previously led the application engineering teams for 3M transportation safety business in Asia. His goal is aligned to that of 3M Transportation Safety Division, which is to help bring families home safely and reduce road traffic crashes in Asia.

Bruno has over 25 years of experience as a traffic and transportation engineer, and has worked in South Africa, the UK, the Middle East and New Zealand. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He is a member of Engineering New Zealand and a Chartered Professional Engineer. He has published and presented research papers on a wide range of traffic engineering topics at several conferences, locally and internationally. Most of his experience has been based in Auckland, and for the last 10 years he has been a business partner, director, and principal traffic and transportation engineer at Traffic Engineering Solutions Ltd. He is actively involved business and contract management. Also, he project manages teams responsible for undertaking small, medium and large scale traffic engineering projects for various councils and Auckland Transport.

A new perspective on crash blackspot analysis

Shane is technical director at Abley in Christchurch. He is an experienced transport researcher who works at the leading edge of his field. He is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the University of Canterbury, where he lectures in road safety. He is also active on two TRB research committees in the USA (Safety Data Analysis and Evaluation and Pedestrians). Shane experience includes crash reduction (Blackspot) studies, safety auditing and crash risk rating, using strategic tools like KiwiRAP and more detailed analysis tools like those in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). He has a strong interested in pedestrians and bicycle safety.
