Co-presenting: Evaluating x-minute cities for people friendly centres

11:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Abstract

Final presentation

-

Becky and Nick are 2021 Civil Systems Engineering graduates from the University of Canterbury. Their honours thesis, in collaboration with Dr Tom Logan and PhD candidate student Mitchell Anderson, established an approach for measuring the 10, 15, or 20-minute city or neighbourhood. For generality, they refer to the 10/15/20 minute city as the x-minute city, where residents are within x minutes of daily amenities. As part of the project the team created an interactive dashboard to support councils and communities in their bid for more equitable and accessible neighbourhoods. Nick is passionate about reimagining our cities to be people-centred, rather than car dominant and has been involved in youth climate advocacy. He loves waving at people while riding around the city! As part of his Resilient Cities Geography class, he was part of the research team ‘Bursting with Stride’ who investigated the perceptions on walkability for older adults in Central North Christchurch. Nick is now working at ViaStrada as a Graduate Transport Engineer in Ōtautahi.
