Biography

Tēnā koutou katoa. My name's Nic Brydon. I'm a consultant and mentor with almost 18 years' experience in running active travel programs from Nelson and Wellington to Perth, WA. My ultimate passion is to empower student champions to lead positive change in their schools and communities. My philosophy is based on engaging and supporting schools through a holistic approach. My main focus is on creating tailored behaviour-change solutions that overcome barriers. I then bring in fun, interactive, and innovative school travel plan initiatives.

Biography

Vivienne is a Technical Principal, Social Science, Resilience and Public Health at WSP’s Research & Innovation Centre in Petone. Her research starts from the question – ‘if I reside here, how do I live well? She is a leading researcher in many public-funded academic research programmes addressing the structural determinants of health and wellbeing. As part of her work, she develops tools to benchmark and monitor New Zealand’s’ environments, including developing frameworks and indicators so we can see how well our transport investments and infrastructure are meeting our needs. Her role in these projects is to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams providing expert knowledge, engaging with communities and stakeholders, undertaking qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and reporting, and disseminating findings. A significant role she plays is to bridge the link between academic and practice knowledge.

Biography

Craig is a Technical Director at Beca and Aotearoa New Zealand transport planning discipline lead. In this role Craig provides input and leadership on strategic land use and transport projects. Craig is passionate about how city-scale transport planning and design can deliver positive benefits to people, communities and the environment. Sarah is the Team Leader – Transport Strategy and Infrastructure, at Tauranga City Council (TCC). Sarah's role covers a wide range of transportation projects, but her passion lies in the active and sustainable travel space, and the interaction between transport and communities.

Abel is a Timetable Analyst (Operations Planning Team) with Auckland Transport. Abel has been at Auckland Transport for over 2 years in this role. Prior to this Abel worked in public transport for over 7 years, first as a Transport Network Supervisor at Pavlovich Coachlines, then as a Service Delivery Supervisor at Kinetic NZ (before NZ Bus). In the past 2 years, Abel has been involved in the scheduling and implementation of the Northwest network. Timetable review of the entire network.

Making traffic signals work for people cycling

Biography

Axel is a director of ViaStrada. He holds an ME (Civil) from Canterbury University and has been active as a transport engineer and planner in NZ since 1998, with some prior experience in Germany. He specialises in sustainable transportation, urban traffic engineering, traffic signals, road safety, research, and transport planning. He is the instigator of the planning and design training courses for cycling, with over 1,500 people having received tuition since 2003. He has presented 100 papers and remits at conferences and workshops in Australasia. Axel’s skills have been sought for projects with a national scope. He was a member of the Cycling Safety Panel, convened by the Transport Agency to advise the New Zealand government on cycling safety, and was technical advisor to the Ministry of Economic Development for the $50m NZ Cycle Trail project. He was ViaStrada’s team leader for the Cycling Network Guidance project that has given New Zealand its own planning and design guidance. He has undertaken research projects in New Zealand and Australia, and several formal trials in NZ. He is the team leader for New Plymouth District’s Transport Choices programme.
