Alan Gray is an urban designer and landscape architect based in Nelson, NZ. Alan has extensive experience in both commercial consultancy and within local government leading the delivery of major capital works projects in NZ since 2004, including public spaces in Wynyard Quarter (Auckland), City Mall (Christchurch), and the pedestrian mall and feature lighting of upper Trafalgar Street in Nelson.

Better scenario planning for large-scale transport programmes

Abstract

Biography

Cameron is a Transportation Engineer and Data Scientist with over ten years’ experience working in large infrastructure programmes, complex data processing/analysis, traffic modelling projects, Integrated Transportation Assessments, and road safety analysis. In the last few years Cameron has developed a Scenario Planning Tool for the NZTA Speed and Infrastructure Programme (SIP) that optimises the future programme based on Road to Zero Targets and Programme Constraints as well as automation of reporting and determining data/system requirements. Cameron has also developed a prototype Scenario Planning Tool for the Transport Systems Plan (TSP) Programme in Tauranga, developing tools and systems for optimising the delivery of transport infrastructure over the next 30 years in the Bay of Plenty. Cameron has also been involved in the TREC network operations team as the primary analyst for forecasting, monitoring, and reporting on journey time delays on the TREC network. This work involves the continuous analysis, and both planned and actual programme work activity while integrating real-time network performance metrics to ensure optimised delivery.

She has led economic analysis for nationally significant infrastructure projects, including the Waitematā Harbour Connections, Northland Roads of National Significance, and the Transport Rebuild East Coast Alliance. Emma is particularly focused on integrating resilience into transport planning, applying innovative tools to monetise resilience benefits and support long-term, value-driven investment decisions.

Biography

Shahaanan is a Senior Emissions Specialist and Asset Management Engineer at WSP with a strong background in sustainability and data analysis. He supports government and private sectors in carbon reduction and reporting, backed by training from Carbon & Energy Professionals (CEP) NZ. His work includes preparing entities for mandatory carbon reporting, modelling fleet emission reduction pathways, and building infrastructure GHG inventories using RAMM data. His recent work involves GHG emission modelling for RCAs under various climate scenarios.

Biography

An energy and climate transition professional, Dr. Pokhrel has led multiple projects at the intersection of energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and transition modelling for over 15 years in the transport and building research sectors. Currently, Dr. Pokhrel oversees energy and GHG emissions management and disclosure of Auckland Transport’s activities, operations, and interventions. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, and his research has been published in many conferences and journals. Outside of work, he mentors young graduates and serves as an external advisory board member in master’s programmes, advocating for the inclusion of sustainability aspects in the curriculum.
