Mr Benjamin Zmijewski
Senior Transport Engineer
Christchurch City Council
Paired-back pedestrian crossings – a system design perspective
4:05 PM - 5:00 PMBiography
Ben Zmijewski is a Senior Transport Engineer at Christchurch City Council, where he works across a broad range of operational transport challenges in an urban environment. A self-described generalist, Ben brings experience from both the consulting and public sectors, having spent five years in transport planning, design, economics, and road safety before moving into local government.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) and a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Geosciences) from Monash University, Australia. His multidisciplinary background supports his practical, systems-focused approach to transport problems, often balancing technical constraints with the real-world needs of communities.
Ben is a member of Engineering New Zealand and the Transportation Group. His presentation focuses on "paired back" pedestrian crossings — exploring how simplifying infrastructure can support safety, and accessibility, at pace and at scale.
When not wading through traffic sign minutiae or pondering kerb radii, he can often be found surfing in the cold waters of Te Waipounamu / South Island.
