Mr Kevan Fleckney
Senior Traffic Engineer
NZ Transport Agency
Co-presenting Improving PT reliability on Auckland’s motorways
3:30 PM - 3:45 PMBiography
I have been working in Highways for 28 years.
I ran my own traffic signal section working for a Unitary Local Authority in the UK, where I operated, designed, managed and optimised traffic control for a decade. Safety was an essential component and I still have personal legal liability for my work.
I have been working in New Zealand for the NZ Transport Agency for nearly twelve years. During this time, I have delivered millions of dollars of ITS onto the Auckland Motorway Network and have advised many of the major projects around the country regarding their ITS requirements (as ITS is an operational tool). I have updated numerous ITS Standards into draft form which are with others to develop. More recently, Connected Journeys Solutions has taken over much of the responsibility for ITS, so I am now settling into a safety-biased role, with particular emphasis on Active Modes and the Mobility Impaired.
Bus shoulder running has been deployed on the motorway network for many years and there is even a section in MOTSAM which covers the topic (see if you can spot the error in the guidance?). I work with Ranjan in the System Performance Team and together we have developed Ranjan’s idea of improving journey time reliability by allowing buses to run through interchanges rather than merge into and diverge out of the left lane of the motorway at every ramp.
