Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) is a team of international designers, planners, and urban strategists committed to reimagining streets as places for people, shaping cities that are safe, healthy, accessible, and equitable for everyone. Building off the strategies and best practices in their Global Street Design Guide (GSDG), they work in over 30 cities around the world to support local governments and practitioners to update policies, build local capacity, implement and evaluate projects, and scale up impact. This workshop will share a high-level overview of some of the technical design approaches and international precedents that GDCI uses to help inspire leaders, inform practitioners, and invite communities to imagine what’s possible when we design streets that put people first. It is an interactive street redesign exercise that allows participants to work with their peers to apply these principles to local New Zealand streets, helping to reimagine streets that are safer, more accessible, and more equitable for everyone. (Participants do not require a design background to participate.) Please come prepared with an example of a communications/transport/bike lane/ political or cultural, success or failure to share and discuss in depth with the group.
