Thorsten has been involved with the design and construction of existing and greenfield pavements since 1991. Working for a contractor for most of his working career while gaining experience as a consultant has sparked an interest in the “art” of granular pavement layer compaction for many years. Through his involvement on the National Pavements Technical Group (NPTG) he drafted a guidance document that outlines the procedure for performing the Plateau Density test, which Waka Kotahi NZTA is considering publishing as a Specification. Thorsten is currently the Pavement Design Manager for Higgins Contractors and provides clients with the most appropriate solution for their material and pavement challenges.

Emile is a charted professional pavement engineer with 15 years’ experience. He started his career in South Africa fulfilling multiple roles within the project life cycle, but all with a strong link to pavements. He emigrated to New Zealand in 2019 continuing his passion and drive in the pavement engineering field. His background is primarily in the consulting arena, but has been providing technical expertise within Fulton Hogan the past 2.5 years. Since joining Fulton Hogan he has been delivering technical designs as well as technical assistance within the Pavement Solutions construction team focusing significantly on granular pavement modification.
